Dr Smith has an advanced certification in Whiplash Traumatology and Biomechanics. We was trained at The Spine Research Institute of San Diego by Dr Arthur Croft who has performed low speed crash tests and published the results (machine vs man videos can be viewed on you tube) Dr Croft also helped design the first active head restraint for Volvo.
Dr Smith has the training to properly evaluate and manage these serious injuries that often result in disc herniations. We all understand that disc injuries are permanent and progressive so it is vital that these patients have the proper diagnostic testing.
MRI is not an emergency diagnostic procedure in the absence of serious neurological deficits. Per the ODG (official disability guidelines) MRI is indicated after 3-4 weeks of therapy without adequate improvement.
Therefore, proper management of a whiplash injury must include 3-4 weeks of therapy.
